A trip to CEBU's hidden attractions!

Oslob, Cebu, Philippines: Swimming with the Gentle Giant

I always enjoy activities offered by nature. Every encounter brings me closer to something so real and priceless. In a country where nature is king and adventures are countless like the Philippines, there is never a dull moment when I'm on one of its beautiful islands relaxing and having fun under its tropical sun.

My last trip in the Philippines let me experience one of the most thrilling encounters I had with nature. It all happened in a small town of Cebu known as Oslob, which is located approximately 82 miles from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Accompanied by my wife and friends, we dipped into its blue waters and carefully swam with a twenty footer whale shark weighing as much as ten metric tons. The boatmen who led us to the diving site are equipped with underwater cameras to catch this once in a lifetime activity. It was truly an amazing experience. An encounter with a creature so big and majestic is something I will remember forever.

While nature and adventure seekers like myself enjoy this kind of experience, it is important to follow the rules and code of conduct attached to it. Every whale shark watcher must keep in mind and follow these important rules: 

-All whale shark watchers should undertake an orientation led by accredited guides and operators before the whale shark watching experience

-A maximum of 30 minutes experience rule must be followed

-Feeding of whale sharks by unauthorized personnel is prohibited

-Use of camera flash is not allowed

-Use of sunscreen is prohibited

-Touching the whale shark is strictly forbidden
